Time and time again, stablecoins have demonstrated their transformative potential. They facilitate value transfer with unparalleled speed and efficiency, bypassing the multiple intermediaries embedded within the traditional financial system. For transactions ranging from simple cross-border payments to multi-million dollar transfers, the reduction in friction and increase in speed is a fundamental, not marginal, advantage. 

However, a significant hurdle remains, preventing widespread adoption. It is not a question of functionality, but one of trust. As these assets move from early adopters into the fiery underbelly of mainstream finance, the primary concern is not utility, but rather ensuring confidence in the value underpinning stablecoins.

 

The efficiency argument has already been settled

At a purely functional level, the case for stablecoins is no longer up for debate. The infrastructure has been built, tested, and proven in real-world scenarios. The transition from theory to operational reality is complete, and these systems now often surpass those they were designed to augment or replace. 

Traditional financial rails, particularly for large or cross-border transactions, are heavily burdened by layers of intermediaries. Each step introduces extra delay, cost and complexity, with settlement times stretching from hours to days. Leveraging blockchain infrastructure, stablecoins drastically reduce friction in value transfer. They facilitate direct, near-instantaneous movement of funds between parties, making geography and transaction size irrelevant. 

Transfers that previously took days can now be finalized in a matter of seconds. That is a game-changing shift in how value moves. And yet, this unprecedented efficiency alone has not been enough to drive universal adoption.

 

Trust is the base layer for growth 

If the efficiency argument has already been settled, then the hesitation surrounding stablecoins lies elsewhere. If it is not about how they function, perhaps it is about what they represent. To take cryptocurrency back to basics, stablecoins are only as reliable as the assets that back them. For users, whether that is individuals, businesses, or institutions, the question is, what is actually underpinning this value? 

The answer to that will determine whether a stablecoin is seen as a viable financial instrument, or as a risk. This is where much of the reluctance stems from. As the market has grown, the number of stablecoins has also increased, with each one claiming to be stable and offering a similar value proposition. However, not all stablecoins are built equal. The real differentiating factor is not branding or adoption, but the strength, structure and accessibility of the underlying collateral. Liquidity provisioning is central to this equation. 

A stablecoin must not only claim to be backed, but also demonstrate that it can meet demand at scale without creating friction. Users need to know that the value represented by a stablecoin is not only theoretical, but also immediately accessible when they hold or transfer it. Until that trust has been firmly established, hesitation will inevitably remain.

 

Transparency will define the winners

As the stablecoin market matures, one fundamental principle is beginning to separate credible projects from the rest: transparency. For years, much of the industry has relied on periodic attestations or self-reported audits to validate reserves. This may have been enough in the past, but this model no longer meets today's standards. 

There is a growing expectation for real-time visibility. Users want to clearly and immediately see the assets underpinning the stablecoin they hold. They want verifiable proof, not abstract guarantees. The closer a project gets to providing this level of transparency, the more confidence it will inspire.

This inevitable shift will drive consolidation within the digital asset space. Just as in past cycles, an initial flood of new entrants will be replaced by a smaller group of credible, transparent, and well-capitalized operators. The stablecoins that come out on top will be those consistently able to prove their collateral is strong and easily accessible.

If you strip the global financial system down to its core, its function is deceptively simple: a mechanism for transferring and exchanging value. Whether it’s a cross-border payment between corporations, a consumer’s purchase at a local store, or the settlement of a high-frequency stock trade, the operation remains the same: financial assets are moved from point A to point B. The problem is, it doesn’t do it very well. It is plagued by a complex, multi-layered architecture involving correspondent banks, various clearinghouses and disparate technological standards.

Joshua Tate, CEO and co-founder of ForumPay, argues that stablecoins are gaining traction not due to their role as a novel asset or on-chain holding bay for traders (though they function as both), but rather as a superior settlement rail. The problem: legacy settlement is slow and fragmented

As a settlement rail, they enable direct value transfer that supports cross-border payments and reduces counterparty risk. As a bridge layer, stablecoins link digital economies with fiat, connect disparate blockchain networks, and provide a stable asset for traditional finance to engage with DeFi. This establishes a new, programmable, and highly efficient global layer for financial settlement.

 

Not all stablecoins are created equal

While the efficiency gains of stablecoins are increasingly clear, their long-term adoption will ultimately hinge on the fundamental issue of trust. According to Tate, not all stablecoins are created equal. The real differentiator is not speed or usability, but confidence in the underlying asset. What backs the stablecoin? How is liquidity provisioned? And, critically, can that be verified in real time?

These questions are becoming central concerns as stablecoins move beyond trading environments and into real-world financial operations. For businesses and institutions, settlement is about certainty, and without transparency, efficiency alone is not enough.

Tate believes that this is likely to drive a natural consolidation within the market. As more stablecoins enter the ecosystem, only those with clear, verifiable collateral and robust liquidity will gain lasting traction. Models that rely on opaque structures or delayed reporting will struggle to compete in an environment where real-time visibility is increasingly expected.

 

The bigger picture: toward asset-agnostic transactions

For Tate, the rise of stablecoins is part of a larger structural transformation, one fundamentally propelled by the digitalization of finance and the growing trend of asset tokenization. As more forms of value transition onto digital infrastructure (take real estate, for example), the boundaries between asset classes begin to blur. Tokenization involves turning real-world assets into digitally native, interoperable, and 24/7-accessible assets held within a single environment.

In a fully digital financial ecosystem, assets can be used directly and move instantaneously, eliminating the need for conversion, complex routing, seasoning and associated delays. The traditional requirement to liquidate (selling one asset to access another) is thus rendered obsolete. From Tate’s perspective, this is where the next phase of financial infrastructure is heading: toward a global settlement model that maximizes capital efficiency by enabling real-time, asset-agnostic transactions. 

This asset-agnostic future requires sophisticated infrastructure, an area where Tate is building an impressive legacy. For many years, the narratives surrounding the rise of digital assets have framed the relationship between crypto and traditional finance as a head-to-head conflict, pitting revolutionary cryptocurrencies against the more established fiat. 

This view, however, misses the mark. The real revolution isn't about choosing one currency to rule them all, but rather about finding a way for both to converge as part of a new and improved digital payments infrastructure that enables more efficient financial transactions. 

Earlier this year, the first steps toward this new, inclusive paradigm were made. Kraken Financial made history in March by becoming the first crypto-native firm to achieve direct access to the Federal Reserve’s payment rails. It’s the first time a crypto payment gateway has transitioned from operating parallel to the traditional financial system to operating within its infrastructure. 

The impact of this milestone reaches well beyond a single company, showing how blockchain payments integration can evolve from a narrative into real-world infrastructure. What we’re seeing are the early stages of convergence between traditional rails and blockchain-based systems; it’s the progress we need to make instant crypto payments a thing of the now. 

 

Crypto plugged in

In 2026, a line that had long separated crypto from the traditional financial system has begun to dissolve. In March, Kraken Financial was granted a Federal Reserve master account. With it, a crypto-native institution stepped inside the core infrastructure of the U.S. financial system. A master account provides direct access to the Federal Reserve’s payment rails. 

These are the systems that move money between banks, clear transactions, and settle value at the highest level of the financial system. Until now, that access has been limited to traditional institutions. 

Crypto companies have always depended on intermediary banks to access fiat systems. Those intermediaries introduced friction, delays in settlement, policy constraints, and, in many cases, outright restrictions. Direct access to Federal Reserve infrastructure bypasses that layer entirely. 

It reduces dependency; increases speed; changes the mechanics of how value moves between systems. The integration of crypto payment gateways onto traditional banking rails blurs the line between them, leading to a convergence of previously distinct financial operations.

 

Building on better rails

The ongoing debate about cryptocurrency incorrectly focuses on the kind of money that will ultimately prevail, whether it's which asset will replace the dollar, or if stablecoins or CBDCs will become dominant. 

These questions fundamentally misunderstand the core issue. The financial system has always had various forms of value; what it has consistently lacked are efficient ways to transfer that value. We don't need new money; we need superior infrastructure or "rails" for movement.

The current system is hampered by layers of intermediaries, slow settlement times, and fractured networks. Transactions are slow not by necessity, but due to the demands of the existing infrastructure. Every step introduces friction, and every intermediary adds cost and complexity. 

Cryptocurrency did not emerge to compete with fiat currency; it emerged to solve this infrastructure problem. Blockchain-based systems enable the direct and rapid movement of value, settling transactions faster and reducing reliance on third parties. Crucially, they allow different asset types to operate on a single, shared underlying infrastructure.

 

Where it’s already happening

From my vantage point within this space, the move toward integrated infrastructure is already underway. This evolution is a necessary response to a digital economy whose demands the current system can no longer meet. Businesses and consumers expect immediate, real-time capital movement globally. However, the existing infrastructure is hampered by outdated processes and fragmented networks. Crypto's role was not to cause this pressure, but to expose it.

Blockchain technology established a new standard by demonstrating the potential for instant, low-friction value transfer. Traditional finance is now moving toward this same efficiency benchmark, albeit through different means. The result is a clear convergence, not the replacement of one system by another. 

As such, the distinction between "crypto" and "traditional finance" is losing relevance. The key is in empowering an infrastructure that facilitates their connection.

Currency-level innovation is not the point

There’s no question that we’re seeing a ton of innovation at the currency level. Since 2009, everyone has been working to build some version of “better money”, whether they call it Bitcoin, stablecoins, tokenized dollars… And to be clear, it does matter. These are faster, more efficient ways to move value. 

In many cases, they already outperform traditional systems. You can move millions in stablecoins in minutes, whereas a wire transfer can take days. That’s a huge improvement. But that’s not the same as fixing the system, because the limitation is how usable that asset is within the broader financial environment. 

Even if Bitcoin or a stablecoin moves instantly, you still run into friction when you try to use it across different systems, convert between asset types, or interact with traditional financial infrastructure. The actual issue, and the genuine opportunity for change, lies a level below the simple replacement of one type of money with another.

 

What really matters: Leveraging the infrastructure 

At some point, it’s more interesting to stop looking at finance as a question of money, and start looking at it as a question of infrastructure. When we break it down, most of the inefficiencies in the system have nothing to do with the currency itself. They come from how the system is designed. 

Banks are incentivized to hold funds, not move them quickly. Payment networks are built on layers of intermediaries. Even a simple transaction can involve multiple parties just to get from one side to the other. This transformation is, therefore, occurring at the infrastructure level. Blockchain and modern payment rails fundamentally transform how value moves. 

This transformation involves streamlining the process, removing unnecessary layers, decreasing reliance on intermediaries, and enabling more direct, real-time transactions. The goal is not to substitute currencies like the dollar or replace banks, but rather to construct a more efficient system for value transfer, irrespective of the asset's form.

 

The infrastructure for universal fungibility

When we start to focus on decentralized infrastructure, it fundamentally changes the implications. We’re now talking about the interoperability of assets, any asset. At some point, everything is going to be tokenized, your dollars, your Bitcoin, your equities, your real-world assets, at some point they’ll all exist in digital form in your digital wallet. 

This is a system built to support universal fungibility, which makes the form these assets take irrelevant; the infrastructure allows them to function interchangeably as part of a transaction. You don’t have to liquidate stock, move funds through a bank, and wait on settlement just to make a payment. You go directly from the asset to the transaction. 

Whether it’s Bitcoin, a digitized dollar, or tokenized equity, it can all be converted and used at the point of payment. That’s what true interoperability looks like, and currently ForumPay is the only solution in the world that has the payment rails infrastructure to effectively digitize any of these assets to be used to be able to pay for things every day, be it a house or a cheeseburger.
